Managing Wrist Pain

The most important thing to get right when managing wrist pain is first understanding where the pain is coming from.

The likelihood of providing valuable treatment and helping your patient to achieve a great outcome increases with your level of expertise in assessment of the wrist.

True expertise in managing wrist pain develops over time when you know how to do a comprehensive assessment of the wrist. There are multiple factors feeding into expertise in wrist assessment.
  • Excellent anatomical knowledge and an in-depth understanding of wrist biomechanics.
  • Ability to take an effective history and understand the relevance of the responses.
  • Knowledge about the efficacy of special tests and ability to accurately interpret the results.
  • Understanding potential proximal and central contributions to wrist pain and when this may be a contributing factor.
  • Clinical reasoning to piece together each element of the assessment to arrive at a diagnosis.
 Key technical skills required:
  • Palpation of bony landmarks and joints of the wrist.
  • Muscle and tendon testing.
  • Correct handling and execution of special tests of the wrist.
  • Examination of proximal and central neural and musculoskeletal structures.
The Wrist Course (16 hours of content and 16 CPD points through the AHTA) teaches this expertise as part of the curriculum. 5 hours is dedicated to anatomy, biomechanics and assessment and consolidates the above mentioned expertise.

The course also covers common conditions, wrist and DRUJ instability, fractures and exercise prescription.

The material is presented in an easy to understand way, professional close up videos of techniques are used as teaching tools and in depth appendices of all testing procedures are included in the 150 page manual.

This content is also included in the Early Career Fellowship in Hand Therapy, our one year training program.
